They are also becoming places where people learn in a fun and informal way. In Hungary, a scientific observatory tested an original approach to raise awareness among its visitors about environmental protection: an escape game. This type of activity, very popular with families and groups of all ages, combines entertainment and education.

The principle is simple. Teams of three to six people must solve a series of puzzles within a limited time. Here, the central theme is waste management, with the motto “reduce, reuse, recycle.” Players first discover a suitcase filled with waste, a deliberately shocking setup to leave an impression. They must then sort plastic bottles, identify hazardous products, and optimize a shopping list to minimize waste. Each puzzle is designed to provoke reflection and debate among participants. Younger players are given a few extra minutes to ensure the challenge remains accessible without being too easy.

To measure the impact of this game, 131 visitors answered a questionnaire before and after their participation. The results are clear: their attitude toward the environment improved significantly. The questions focused on emotions such as anger toward pollution, anxiety about deforestation, and pride in acting for the planet. After the game, the responses showed greater concern for these issues. University students even made more progress than middle school students, likely because the puzzles better matched their level of understanding.

What makes this game effective is its ability to create interactions among players. By discussing and collaborating to solve the puzzles, participants learn from each other. This approach is inspired by socio-constructivism, a theory that suggests knowledge is built through exchange with others. The game also stimulates curiosity and a sense of accomplishment, two important drivers for embedding new behaviors.

Another advantage: this format is low-cost and easy to adapt. All it takes is a suitcase, a few combination locks, and recycled materials to recreate the experience elsewhere. Museums, especially smaller ones, can thus offer educational activities without investing in complex installations. The stakes are high, as cultural venues have a role to play in the ecological transition. They reach a broad and diverse audience, far beyond the classroom.

The experience proves that it is possible to make learning about ecology more concrete and engaging. By turning visitors into active participants, the game helps them better understand everyday actions and their impact. A clever way to show that protecting the planet can also be a moment of shared complicity and enjoyment.

Origin of Sources

Original Publication

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11159-025-10178-x

Title: An escape game in a museum as an opportunity to enhance visitors’ environmental attitudes

Journal: International Review of Education

Publisher: Springer Science and Business Media LLC

Authors: Mihály Kovács

Can an escape game in a museum enhance our environmental awareness?
